Blackburn missed great opportunity

Blackburn missed a great opportunity to improve their league standing after only managing a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town during the weekend. They, however, could have taken three points had it not been for the missed penalty by striker Jordan Rhodes. The club record signing has been one of the best players in the Championship since his £ 8 million move. This even led to links with Newcastle United and other Premier League clubs in the summer. Blackburn, though, persuaded Rhodes to stay at Ewood Park despite being in the Championship.

He has so far rewarded them with four goals in 11 appearances, but he could have taken his tally to 5 for the season had he not missed his penalty against Huddersfield. The 24-year-old was making his 100th appearance for the club. He won a 61st minute penalty but it was put wide off the post. Manager Gary Bowyer said that he was disappointed not to have taken three points from a match despite dominating for much of the 90 minutes. He said that he would instead focus on the performances of the players rather than the missed penalty. The two more dropped points mean that the club are 12th in the table.
Blackburn have an away match against Ipswich Town after the international break. “Jordan Rhodes has won us loads of games since he’s been here and he’s going to win us loads more in the future. It’s disappointing for the lad that he’s missed it but it wasn’t just down to that. We’ve had enough goal attempts in the game to have won easily. Anybody walking away from here today surely sees the effort and the passion and commitment that these players have got at this football club and we need to encourage them and support them,” said Bowyer.

Blackburn Hopes Are Fading

Blackburn Rovers’ hopes of achieving automatic promotion back to the Premier League appears to be fading off after the team suffered a 3-2 defeat against Derby County in the latest Championship round of fixtures. Blackburn came into the match after having taken two wins from the last four matches while they have also suffered two defeats from the other two. Manager Gary Bowyer was looking to improve the inconsistency in terms of results, but there was more of the same after this latest defeat. Ben Marshall helped Blackburn opened the scoring after just a minute on the clock.

Things looked extremely positive from then on and, but the lead did not last long after Ward equalised for Derby before the 10th minute. Hughes’ goal in the 37th minute helped Derby get the advantage which was later doubled in the second half through Ward once again. Gestede’s goal for Blackburn just 12 minutes before injury time appeared to spark signs of the home team, but the comeback never arrived and Derby held on for another three points. The victory has helped Derby move up to 7th in the table while Blackburn remain mid-table with 10 points from the opening seven matches.
The Lancashire team face league strugglers Fulham during the weekend away from home. “I think a draw was the least we deserved. Lee Grant has pulled off numerous saves, he and Richard Keogh were their best players. We had a right good go, we were camped in their half, put many balls in the box. We ended with five up front, we ran them really close. Obviously we are disappointed with the third goal we conceded because it was a foul all day long on Craig Conway,” said the Blackburn boss. Conceding goals has been a major problem for Bowyer and he will be hoping for an improved performance in the next match.

Hughes Believes Blackburn Can Make It To Top Tier

Mark Hughes, who played for Blackburn Rovers for a couple of years from 2000 to 2002 and managed them as well for a while, is of the opinion that the Riversiders have every chance of making it to the English top tier in the upcoming season if they don’t have as many injury issues as they had during their campaign in 2013-14.

Hughes’ team Stoke City had travelled to the Ewood Park last weekend to play a pre-season match against the home side.
Both the teams scored a goal each and the match was a draw.

It was the 6th and last pre season match for the Rovers this summer. Their performance overall in these matches have been alright. They have won two, while, played draw on four occasions.

There was significant betterment in the game of the Rovers in the Championship last season. With 18 wins and 16 draws, they had secured 70 points in 46 matches and had achieved a top 10 finish. In the season prior to that, they had finished all the way down to no. 17 in the table.

According to Hughes, the players in the Rovers camp are quite young and thus, hungry for success at the moment. If their fitness remains good, they would be having a very fruitful campaign in the second tier this time around.

Speaking to the reporters after the match between Stoke City and Blackburn, Hughes said, “They (the Rovers) are young, but, very capable. There are some really potent guys in that team. If Gary gets his combinations right and he doesn’t have too many injury worries, his team has a good chance of earning promotion.”

The last time when the Rovers had been promoted to the Premier League, Hughes was a part of their squad.

Blackburn Releases Etuhu

The Blackburn Rovers have released Dickson Etuhu. The Nigerian’s contract was actually a couple of years away from being expired, but, he himself also wanted to leave which paved the way for the termination of the contract.

Etuhu had signed for the Rovers at the start of the 2012-13 Season after leaving Fulham. He had been brought to the Ewood Park with big expectations, but, he couldn’t live up to it. He was hit by quite a few injures during his tenure which limited his no. of appearances to 24 only in two seasons.

Considering Etuhu’s age, his fitness could not have been expected to improve drastically in the future. So, the Rovers management decided to let him go.

Blackburn yesterday released a statement confirming the exit of Etuhu. That statement was, “We want to thank Etuhu for the effort that he has put in for us in the last couple of seasons. It was a pleasure having him. We wish that he achieves a lot of success in the remainder of his career.”

Etuhu is not the only player who had been put on sale by Blackburn. There were a few other names as well whom the Rovers wanted to get rid of when the last season finished. Those names were Alex Marrow, DJ Campbell and David Goodwillie.

One out of the above mentioned guys i.e. Goodwillie has now been sold, but, the Rovers are yet to find the buyers for Campbell and Marrow.

The Blackburn boss, Gary Bowyer, is quite determined to get his squad right for the upcoming season. He has been doing a lot of transfer business in the last few weeks. Apart from selling players, he has bought a couple of good ones too.

The Blackburn fans would be hoping that the new squad that Bowyer is forming brings glory to the club next season.
